In the summer of 1890, Roman Catholic Sisters of Our Lady of the Good Shepherd from St. Paul, Minnesota, opened the House of the Good Shepherd as a home for children and girls and women. In 1907, the charity moved to a more substantial location at N 50th Street and Sunnyside Avenue N and became the Home of the Good Shepherd, housing 125 girls. By 1950, the client base was referred to as "troubled teens" and "keepsakes for Heaven".
In 1973, after providing over 60 years of service to young women seeking shelter, education, and training, declining numbers of residents forced the Home of the Good Shepherd to close. In 1975, the Wallingford community defeated a proposal to turn the 11-acre site into a shopping center, and the City of Seattle bought the property with Forward Thrust and Federal Revenue Sharing funds. The City then transferred the buildings to Historic Seattle for use as a multi-purpose community center. The project is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and gained Official City of Seattle Landmark status on September 10, 1984 (Ord. # 111882).
Presently, the GSC houses a number of nonprofit organizations and schools including the International Snow Leopard Trust, Seattle Tilth, the Meridian School, and the Wallingford Senior Center. In 2002, Historic Seattle added six live/work units for artists, ranging in size from 580 to 650 sq. feet. The artist studios are located in a space once used for the school's dance classes and costume storage.
