Social Innovation and Leadership Program, Spring 2017
Originally from Okinawa, Hideo is majoring in Law at Hosei University
Hideo had a life changing moment in high school when he got an opportunity to travel to the US as an exchange student. It was then when he felt his mind broaden as he realized the world had so much to offer. He wanted to bring the knowledge and experience he gained back to Japan and make a positive impact in his community. Having been born and raised in Okinawa Prefecture, one of the things Hideo struggled with during high school was the lack of education he received related to career opportunities. There were not enough career fairs or exposure to different organizations that encouraged students to expand their horizon and dream big. It was only when he went to the US and Tokyo that he realized the infinite number of paths he could take for his career choice.
Hideo now wants to change this reality and ensure that every young adult in Okinawa has the same exposure he eventually got. Hideo has started working on this objective by setting up a student organization which creates a platform for high school students to get a better understanding of a world outside of school. He has organized seminars with collaboration with various organizations bringing in guest speakers, as well as college graduates who provide advice and mentorship for the students. Hideo plans to continue doing this work, as it is part of his vision for a better Okinawa.
Through the TOMODACHI-Microsoft iLEAP Social Innovation and Leadership Program, Hideo hopes to enhance his own leadership style and get a better understanding of how to create social change in today’s world.
