Kodai’s Story

Originally from Ibaragi, Kodai is majoring in Faculty of Science at Tokai University

Kodai believes that in order to reduce global poverty, one needs to strongly focus on providing access to education, especially in developing countries. During his travels to Cambodia, Kodai was surrounded by beauty and splendor. He came across hardworking individuals who were full of hope for the future. Despite the positivity, he also witnessed the devastating side of poverty that broke his heart. Seeing children begging and not having enough to survive left him feeling helpless and frustrated. This experience led Kodai into wanting to focus on one of the root causes of poverty – lack of education.

Kodai’s vision for the future is to start a social business that would be focused on “poverty and education”. However, he knows that it is a long road ahead and wants to ensure he has all the knowledge and expertise in this area. Kodai wants to start by working for a nonprofit organization based in a developing country with the focus on education. He hopes through this experience, he will be able to gain some real life knowledge in understanding the policies involved in poverty alleviation.

Through the TOMODACHI-Microsoft iLEAP Social Innovation and Leadership Program, Kodai wants to learn how to be a better communicator, have the opportunity to have reflection and grow as a person.
