Limon Dos Library Celebrates Women’s Rights, Regals Us in Song

International Women’s Day – 45 women and a number of men attended a performance and presentation on domestic abuse at the Limon Library, sponsored by Rancho Santana. This hopes to be the first in many monthly community programs to come!
“This day is important for us, the women of Nicaragua, and we’re going to celebrate it in grand style!” said Araceli Bonilla.
On March 8, International Women’s Day, more than 45 women and a few men gathered in Limon 2 for a program sponsored by Rancho Santana.
The program was organized by Lidieth Alvarez, 30, the director of Formacion Fenix, a local youth leadership group. Guests were welcomed, regaled with a song, a poem, and a dance performance. This was followed by a presentation about intra-familial violence by a woman trained by the Casa de la Mujer, a women’s rights organization in Rivas.
“This event is important so that women can learn about their rights and have a day to celebrate and have fun,” said Joselyn Ruiz, a Fenix member.

The presenter shared a video and then spoke about what constitutes abuse and where women can go for help. A highlight of the program was a skit about domestic conflict written and performed by Fenix members, which while hilarious at times, pointed to situations which all too often are not spoken about openly.
“I am excited because it’s our first event and possibly we’re going to have many more,” said Sonia Noguera, president of the Limon 2 Library, which hosted the event.
“My hope,” continued Sonia, “is that the women understand the message of this afternoon, and that we’ll have better opportunities, and yes, that we can achieve this objective.”
