Harold has been studying the topic of human potential – in himself and others – since childhood. Even as a kid, he pored over self-help books to learn more about what he might be capable of doing and becoming. These days, he considers himself a student of Buddhism, having devoured volumes on the subject in his ongoing quest for knowledge about what helps us become our best selves.

When he’s not reading up on self-improvement, Harold stays busy as director of the King County Department of Transportation, which operates Metro Transit, the King County Water Taxi, the Road Services Division, Fleet Administration and the King County International Airport at Boeing Field. Harold has worked for King County since 1983, becoming department director in 2002.

In addition to receiving his Bachelor’s with a focus on Asian Studies from Pomona College in Los Angeles, Harold earned his Master’s in Public Affairs from the University of Washington. He is president of the University of Washington Nikkei Alumni Association and a member of the U.S.-Japan Council. He visited Japan in 2007 as part of the Japanese American Leadership Delegation. Harold enjoys volunteer work, and is often asked to help organizations as an emcee or auctioneer for fundraising events.

Harold was drawn to iLEAP because he believes its programs tap into the best of what the human species is capable of achieving, wherever individuals are from and whatever cause they choose to champion. Just as he maintains a sense of curiosity about his own potential, Harold supports iLEAP because it does the same for global leaders who are empowered to reach any goal they set.
