Special Programs

iLEAP regularly partners with institutions and funders to design special programs that are customized meet the leadership development needs for their constituencies. iLEAP designs and delivers transformational educational experiences that can be adapted to fit a wide range of topics and lengths of time. Since 2008, we have worked closely with a number of partners who have specific training needs related to iLEAP’s core competencies in leadership development, education, international relations, and social entrepreneurship and innovation.


Social Innovation Forum Japan (SIFJ)

The iLEAP Social Innovation Forum Japan (SIFJ) was created to serve the post-March 11th rebuilding efforts in Japan and to amplify the local impact and global voice of those Japanese leading social change efforts in the wake of the triple disaster. The SIFJ was grounded in three anchor points: one, as a capacity building and global leadership training for Japanese social leaders and entrepreneurs, two, as a platform for Americans to learn from and build practical partnerships of mutual support with Japanese civil society institutions and social businesses and, three, to seed and cultivate new global collaborations within civil society in the Asia-Pacific region in order to best solve key global issues.

Run over three years (2011-2014) the SIFJ trained nearly forty key Japanese social leaders and entrepreneurs in the skills necessary to resource their initiatives, grow global partnerships with American collaborators, cultivate the next generation of young Japanese social entrepreneurs, and ultimately strengthen and transform the civil society sector in Japan. The SIFJ was made possible due to generous support from the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnerships and the US-Japan Council.


Food Innovation for Regional Sustainability in Tohoku (FIRST)

Food Innovation for Regional Sustainability in Tohoku (FIRST) was created in partnership with the TOMODACHI Initiative to be an investment in the future of food and farming innovation in Japan, with a particular focus on the Tohoku region. Run over three years (2015-2017) the program grew the leadership and cross-cultural skills within the next generation of Japanese (ages 35 and younger) who were committed to social innovation in the production, processing, distribution, and/or consumption of food in Japan.


TOMODACHI-Microsoft Social Innovation and Leadership (SIL)

The TOMODACHI-Microsoft iLEAP Social Innovation and Leadership program was designed to cultivate a new generation of Japanese social entrepreneurs and community leaders (ages 18-25) who are prepared to make a positive difference in Japan, the United States, and around the world. Originally started Social Innovation in Seattle (SIIS), within 5 years the SIL program has graduated nearly 175 young Japanese leaders.


Social Innovation in Seattle for Young Professionals (SIIS YP)

Social Innovation in Seattle for Young Professionals (SIIS YP) was a one week program in 2013 and 2014 conducted in partnership with Mainichi Education Abroad designed to deepen participant’s knowledge about the basic tenets of social innovation and enterprise and how it is being applied in Seattle and around the world. YP participants experienced skill-based seminars, as well as small group discussion, site visits and personal inquiries. Some of the seminar topics were: personal leadership, social leadership and collaboration, creating a theory of change and innovation in philanthropy.


reImagine MyPro

reImagine MyPro was an eight week program in 2015 conducted in partnership with Entrepreneurial Training for Innovative Communities (ETIC). The program trained and supported young Japanese professionals in their work to initiate and grow projects or businesses of their own in the provincial areas of Japan. It led participants through a diversity of learning experiences that took place in Seattle and was followed by an applied internship experience in either the US or other country. All of these experiences were focused on learning and personal and professional growth. After the completion of the program, participants returned to Japan to implement collaborative projects in their respective area of interest.
